Canva MCP Server: The AI Connector vs the Developer MCP Server Explained

Canva shipped an official MCP server. If you searched “Canva MCP” expecting one thing, you’ll find two: a consumer-facing AI Connector for design work, and a developer-facing MCP server for building on the Canva platform. Mixing them up is the easiest way to waste an afternoon on the wrong setup guide.

Short answer: if you want ChatGPT or Claude to create, edit, or search Canva designs for you, you want the Canva AI Connector at mcp.canva.com/mcp. If you’re a developer building a Canva App or integrating with the Connect API, you want the Canva Developer MCP Server documented at canva.dev.

This information is correct as of September 2026.

The two Canva MCP servers

Canva AI Connector (for everyday design work)

The AI Connector is Canva’s remote MCP server for AI assistants. It connects tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Claude Code directly to your Canva account via OAuth, no API key required. Once connected, your AI assistant can:

It’s available on Canva Pro, Teams, Business and Nonprofit plans. It’s not available on the free plan, and Teams or Business admins can restrict or disable it entirely from their admin settings if they want tighter control over which connectors staff can use.

Canva Developer MCP Server (for building on Canva)

The Developer MCP Server is a different product aimed at a different audience: developers building Canva Apps or integrating with the Canva Connect API. Rather than exposing “create a design” as an end-user action, it exposes the building blocks developers need to build their own integrations and apps on top of Canva’s platform, documented at canva.dev alongside the rest of Canva’s developer tooling.

If you’re a marketer who just wants Claude to knock out a social graphic, this isn’t the one you want. If you’re an engineer extending what Canva can do, it is.

Which AI clients work with the AI Connector

The AI Connector is built for the current generation of MCP-compatible assistants:

For most marketers, ChatGPT or Claude’s built-in connector flow is the fastest path in: connect once via OAuth, then reference Canva designs or ask for new ones directly in the conversation. Developers wiring it into Cursor or Claude Code will need to add the server manually to their MCP client config.

Why this matters for marketing teams

Canva sits in a different spot in the design stack than a tool like Figma. Figma added write access via Code to Canvas for developers pushing code-generated UI into an editable canvas — a workflow built around designers and developers working together. Canva’s AI Connector is built for the opposite end of the team: the marketer who needs a social graphic, a one-pager, or a resized ad set finished in the next ten minutes, without opening the app and hunting for the right template.

That’s a meaningful distinction for the agentic design stack marketers are assembling. Code-generation models and image models handle bespoke, from-scratch design work. Canva’s AI Connector handles the high-volume, template-driven design work marketing teams actually spend most of their week on: resizing an ad for five placements, autofilling a webinar template with this week’s speaker, or pulling last quarter’s deck back out to update a chart.

Faster template turnaround. Instead of opening Canva, finding the right template and manually swapping in copy, you can ask your AI assistant to autofill it directly.

Design search without leaving the chat. Need last month’s launch graphic? Ask Claude or ChatGPT to search your Canva designs rather than digging through folders.

Fits the same pattern as other MCP servers. Connecting an AI agent straight to a tool’s data, rather than exporting and re-importing by hand, is the same shift we’ve tracked across the MCP ecosystem — from analytics to design tools.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Canva MCP server?

Yes, but there are two of them. The Canva AI Connector at mcp.canva.com/mcp lets AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude create and edit designs on your behalf. The separate Developer MCP Server, documented at canva.dev, is aimed at developers building Canva Apps and Connect API integrations.

What’s the difference between the Canva AI Connector and the Developer MCP Server?

The AI Connector is for everyday design work: connect ChatGPT or Claude and ask it to create a design, autofill a template, search your existing designs, or export a file. The Developer MCP Server is for engineers building on the Canva Connect API and Canva Apps SDK, exposing developer-facing tools rather than end-user design actions.

Which Canva plans include the AI Connector?

The AI Connector is available on Canva Pro, Teams, Business and Nonprofit plans. It is not available on Canva’s free plan.

Can admins disable the Canva AI Connector?

Yes. Canva Teams and Business admins can control which apps and connectors, including the AI Connector, are available to members through their team’s admin settings.

About Growth Method

Design tools are multiplying inside the marketing stack faster than anyone can manually wire them together — Figma for product surfaces, Canva for everyday creative, image and video models on top of both. Growth Method is the agentic marketing platform for B2B teams: connect the design and analytics tools you already use, including Canva’s MCP server alongside GA4, PostHog and the rest of your stack, and both your team and your AI agents can plan, launch and analyse campaigns from your live marketing data, rather than stitching each tool together by hand.
